What is BARBERSHOP HARMONY? |
|
![]() |
BARBERSHOP HARMONY is four-part, a cappella, close-harmony singing. The melody is carried in the second part, called the lead. The tenor harmonizes above the melody, the bass sings the low notes, and the baritone sings the "other harmony," sometimes above and sometimes below the melody. |

"Barbershop
quartet singing is four guys tasting the holy essence of four individual
mechanisms coming into complete agreement." |

CONGRATULATIONS TO PATRICK HALL!
2005 Barbershopper of the Year (Gary Brown Award)
Patrick has been a Chapter member since 2002. His first exposure to barbershop came as a child when his father would “drag” him to barbershop rehearsals in Angola Indiana where Patrick would join in as a guest of the Pokagon Pitch Pipers. Since joining the Chapter Patrick has been blessed to find several quartets to ring chords with. They include EMT, The Bumps and Four Got to Shave.
He has been very active since the first day he joined and is currently serving in his second year as Chapter President

DAVID WOOLF, a music teacher in a local school and a former barbershopper is our next Chorus Director
Meet Dave Woolf, our new Director starting July 1, 2006
Dave Woolf hails from Allegan, where he fell in love with barbershop harmony listening to a faculty quartet from Allegan High School, and listening to “Barbershop Showcase” on WKZO. He started his own quartet in the freshmen dorm at Grand Rapids Baptist College (now Cornerstone University. “The Boiler Room Four” toured the Midwest, bringing both barbershop and gospel to churches and other groups in the summer of 1982. He received a BS in Education from Calvin College and a BA from Cornerstone University. After teaching music in Arkansas for two years, he began graduate studies at WMU while also singing baritone in the Mall City Chorus and with the chapter quartet “The Keynote Address” After teaching music in Ohio for two years, Dave returned to Michigan to complete his MA in Teaching at WMU and to teach at the Walkerville Rural Communities Schools. Dave and his family moved to Kalamazoo in 1999 and is currently teaching vocal music for the Gull Lake Community Schools. While not ringing chords, Dave performs with the Kalamazoo Pipe Band and sings bass in the Richland Bible Church gospel quartet.
Dave and his wife, Melody, have three beautiful children, Sonnet, age 12, Jonathan, age 11 and Mark, age 8.
